Meet Melissa Boyle, the owner of Moxie Glass Company. Eight years ago, Melissa took up the hobby of glasblowing. She started off by asking the local glassblower to teach her the basics. Initially, he was reluctant because of potential competition in the area, but he eventually caved in and showed her the tricks of the trade. Since then, there has been no looking back.
Although it started off as a fun hobby, it turned out to be an expensive one. Melissa reached a point in her glassblowing career where she either had to take it up full-time, or give it up altogether. She decided to opt for the former. Melissa has now made the most of her business by making terrariums, figurines, and glass straws. She has even worked with environmental groups in the past, who have used her products for fundraising events. When she learned, through a friend, that straws were the most commonly found items on beach clean-ups, Melissa decided to take up making glass starws in a big way. She feels that it really is a product that can make a difference, considering the large number of straws that wind up in landfills.
Although one might believe that running a glassblowing store would be difficult, Melissa relishes the challenge. She enjoys what she does and is just happy to know that she is making some sort of difference in her own innovative way.
